Last Thursday, four members of the Green Schools Committee made a trip to the RDS for the very first Green Schools Expo being held in Ireland! We couldn’t get over how busy the venue was with students from primary and secondary schools from all over the country in attendance. The boys got to see the president Michael D. Higgins and hear his speech on the importance of looking after our environment. The boys enjoyed building circuits which made fans turn and music and sirens play. We also saw people making really cool art out of recycled materials such as CD’s, pieces of tin and cans! The boys generated their own electricity by cycling specially designed bicycles, then realising how much energy and effort it takes to power a fridge for just one minute. We were shocked by how much electricity some appliances require- take a look at the free Home Energy Manager App on http://www.seai.ie/Power_of_One/Downloads/Phone_Apps/ to save yourself some money!
We have just got new hall flooring which means we will be able hold assemblies once again. This means that green school updates will be able to happen more often now for our school. We have established a new water saving system in the school... there were four people who signed the form; Mr.Healy, Conor mcCabe, Luke Walsh and Ms.Sheehan. The school has seen a 20% reduction in waste water as week 1 and 2 was very high in leaking taps but week 3 and 4 wow there was a 20% drop. We're aiming for a reduction of 30% and hopefully by March we can say the school has no leaks withthe help of the Water Watchers and their monitoring.
We are very excited to visit the Green Schools Expo in the RDS this Thursday- the Committee have elected four boys to go. It has been decided that the remaining members will go to the Flag ceremony in May should we be successful in our application. We had a visit from Mr. Dara Wyer this week to review us for our next Green Flag, we are hoping to hear good news from An Taisce :)
We are currently continuing our work on recycling, energy awareness and water saving and are preparing ideas for World Water Day on the 28th March- the committee have some wonderful ideas about activities and prizes classes could win for being water efficient.
